About SCBC
Who are we?
Somerville College Boat Club is an organisation designed to get everyone and anyone interested in trying a new sport (or picking up an old one) and getting involved in this iconic Oxford tradition. We aim to provide for wide a range of abilities: whether you have rowed since you could walk or have never set foot in a boat, there is something for anyone keen.
So How Does It ALl Work?
Once you have joined the club, a wide range of training and social events are provided every week of term all year round. Training involves weights training, erging, tank sessions and, of course, rowing on the water. See below for commonly asked questions.
How often is training?
There is training most days of the week, weather permitting, but the commitment level can be anything from a couple of days a week. The amount that we are able to train on the water is weather dependent, although we are currently investigating alternative training locations to be able to row more often…
How big is the boat club?
We tend to have around sixty rowers and coxes who row at a variety of levels, and tend to have two or three boats entered into each of the women’s and open side for the main inter-collegiate races.
Who can row?
Any current student of Somerville College (undergraduate or postgraduate) is able to row and race with SCBC. We also welcome SCR and staff members who are interested, and often have alumni coming back to row on occasion, especially during the racing season. Anyone can be an associate member of the club, meaning they can row with us and race in certain events.
Who runs the club?
SCBC is an entirely student-led organisation, run by a democratically elected committee which is voted in every year. For more information, click below.
What are we training for?
A year in the life of an SCBC athlete is varied and full of events, with a couple of main races called Bumps Races. Click below for more information about the programme.
